Founded in 2002, Summit Investment Management LLC is a private investment company headquartered in Denver, Colorado, with offices in Santa Monica, California. Since its inception, Summit has invested more than $1.5 billion in distressed debt acquisitions, balance sheet restructures of operating companies, special situation capital, bridge loans and joint ventures.
Typical investments range between $1 million and $75 million with the flexibility to do larger transactions. Summit’s existing portfolio includes commercial & industrial loans, asset-based loans and cash flow credits, along with a diverse commercial real estate portfolio consisting of hospitality, industrial, multi-family, c-store, retail, warehouse, office, self-storage, golf course, environmentally challenged property, and other esoteric asset classes.

Charles J. (CJ) Burger is a Founding Member and the President & Chief Executive Officer of Summit. He is responsible for overseeing the business development team. Prior to Summit’s inception, CJ was the Managing Director of the Special Assets Group at Republic Financial Corporation. CJ began his career as a Staff Accountant with Coopers & Lybrand in New York before taking a role as a Senior Vice President with Fleet Bank in Rhode Island. CJ holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from New York University and is a past board member of the Colorado Turnaround Management Association (TMA).
Steve Petrie is a Founding Member and the Chief Operating Officer of Summit. At Summit, Steve is responsible for managing the asset management, loan operations and accounting functions of the firm. Prior to Summit’s inception, Steve was the Managing Director of Asset Management at Republic Financial Corporation. Prior to Republic, he was with Ocwen Financial Corporation, Wilshire Financial Corporation, Univest Financial Corporation and Bank One Texas, NA. Steve holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Texas at Arlington and is a Certified Public Accountant. Steve is also a 12-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Brian Shloss is a Partner and Managing Director with Summit. His primary responsibilities include managing the underwriting team and investment process. Additional duties include deal sourcing, financial modeling, negotiations and closings. Prior to joining Summit in 2009, Brian spent four years as a Regional Manager and Principal with Western Capital Partners where he originated bridge loans secured primarily by real estate. His past experience also includes eight years in various roles in the securities markets in New York and Chicago. Brian holds a bachelor’s degree from Emory University and an MBA from the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
David O’Halloran is a Partner and Managing Director at Summit, and is responsible for managing the underwriting and asset management of large single name credit exposures. David has 25 years of credit trading, investment and turnaround experience. Prior to joining Summit, David was a Managing Member of an independent advisory firm advising companies on business turnarounds and restructurings. Prior to that he spent ten years at Bank of America in high yield and credit derivatives trading and finished his tenure as Portfolio Manager for a special opportunities credit fund within the bank. Before joining Bank of America, David spent seven years in Morgan Stanley’s merchant banking/private equity division and its high yield trading desk in both New York and London. David is a graduate of the School of Architecture, University College Dublin, Ireland.
Reed Gillis joined Summit in 2010 and is a Director. His responsibilities include business development, deal sourcing and underwriting. Reed has held various roles in the distressed and restructuring secondary market for more than 14 years. During that time, he has completed more than $700 million in loan purchases, originations and restructures in commercial real estate, commercial & industrial loans, equipment leases, asset based loans and 1-4 single family residential loans. Reed holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Colorado State University and is an active member of the Turnaround Management Association and the American Bankruptcy Institute.
Danny Levene is a Director in Summit’s Santa Monica, California office. He is responsible for business development for both Summit Investment Management and Keen-Summit Capital Partners. Prior to Summit, Danny worked for 11 years at Great American Group, initially as a Financial Analyst, and most recently as Vice President, Business Development, specializing in providing valuation and disposition services to clients with sales ranging from $10 million to $3 billion. Danny holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Southern California, Marshall School of Business. Danny is also a licensed real estate salesperson in the state of California.
